Shining STAR Award

Each year, San Juan Education Foundation recognizes an individual who has contributed in a major way to the success of the Foundation, helping the organization advance its goal of supporting inspired teaching to better prepare students for success.

Larry Miles

Larry Miles

Larry Miles has been contributing for over 30 years to the San Juan school district as a parent volunteer, school board member, and friend of the district.

Larry’s two children both attended San Juan schools during which time Larry volunteered in many capacities, including serving as a Boosters Club member at El Camino High School, working bingo games to help fundraising for school programs, and helping in the school’s basketball and soccer programs.

After his kids, Jonathan and Katherine, graduated from El Camino High School, Larry continued his service to San Juan, being elected to the District’s Board of Education from 2004-2012, serving several terms as Board President and helping the District survive the Great Recession.  Larry chaired the 2012 Measure N campaign and played a critical role in passing the District’s $350 million-dollar school bond that is now resulting in amazing projects throughout the entire District.

After Larry retired from the Board in 2012, he continued his community service and support of San Juan.  He joined the Board of the Aerospace Museum of California.  As Vice-President of the Museum, Larry has supported initiatives to emphasize STEM education as its primary mission, helping to establish a special relationship between the Museum and San Juan schools.  He also helped create Inside California Education, an award-winning show on public education shown on every PBS station in California, and now serves as Co-Executive Producer.  Inside California Education focuses on the best of California public education and has featured several San Juan segments such as shows on Rio Americano’s Civitas Program, Camp Winthers, and San Juan High School’s career pathway programs.

In 2014, Larry worked collaboratively with the San Juan Foundation to raise scholarship money for San Juan students through the Cal Worthington Memorial Scholarship.  Larry served as Vice-President and General Counsel for Cal for almost eight years.  This year, $15,000 in scholarships were awarded to 9 students at three of our San Juan high schools.

Larry has practiced law for 38 years and is founding partner of Miles McLeod, A Professional Law Corporation.  He has also been a pilot for 46 years, holding an Airline Transport Pilot (“ATP”) license; the FAA’s highest pilot license.
